Field Visit U.S. Embassy and EMSAGS Project
On December 6, 2024, the EMSAGS project, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, organized an important field visit to Brokopondo and Compagniekreek.
Five representatives participated in the visit, including three senior international environmental officials, two U.S. Embassy staff members in Suriname, and two representatives from the EMSAGS project. The purpose of the visit was to gain deeper insights into the impact of small-scale gold mining activities on the environment and to explore initiatives promoting the balanced use of natural resources.
Field Visit Highlights:
- Courtesy visit to Mr. Michel Pina, the village captain of Compagniekreek.
- Visit to an abandoned small-scale gold mining site near Compagniekreek.
- Visit soil restoration project at Compagniekreek, implemented by TAUW bv in collaboration with the EMSAGS project.
- Visit to a polluted waterbody in Compagniekreek used for household purposes.
- Visit of the Alternative Livelihood Project demonstration field in Compagniekreek.
- Visit to small-scale gold mining activities along Brownsweg (kilometer 15-16).
- Visit to the MTEC building in Brownsweg.
This field visit strengthened international cooperation and provided valuable insights into sustainable strategies for environmental management and restoration in Suriname. The visit highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to address environmental challenges and work toward the balanced use of natural resources.
