Knowledge sharing and exchange Suriname - Guyana on small scale gold mining

From June 24 to June 28, 2024 a knowledge sharing and exchange program between Guyana and Suriname took place in Guyana. A team consisting of representatives from various government institutions involved in the mining sector and the EMSAGS Project participated in this knowledge exchange program. This activity falls under the South-South cooperation supported through output 4.3 namely “Regional cooperation mechanism consolidated, promoting information exchange with neighbouring countries of the Guianas on best environmental practices and policies in ASGM.

This is one of the activity under the south-south cooperation within the EMSAGS Project. The objectives for this exchange was:

  • Knowledge exchange between Suriname and Guyana agencies regarding Near Real Time Monitoring (NRTM) , monitoring and enforcement, policy and legal framework of the ASGM sector.
  • Identification of topics and issues at a technical and regional level towards the designing of a high-level regional seminar between Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

This knowledge sharing did also include the sharing of lessons learned from the project’s outputs. Besides the representatives from various government institutions, small scale miners also took part in this exchange program to witness and share experience on environmentally responsible mining techniques.
