Supporting Mining and Rural Communities through Sustainable Agricultural Production

The EMSAGS project plays a key role in strengthening communities involved in mining activities. The project focuses on supporting existing alternative, sustainable livelihoods by promoting sustainable agricultural production. This is achieved through training and technical support in both production and marketing. The project "Sustainable Food Security and Awareness on Gold Mining Effects", implemented by Tropenbos Suriname (TBS) and financed by the EMSAGS project, helps reduce the ecological and economic damage caused by mining activities, while also providing food security and economic opportunities for local communities.

Training and Hands-on Support

TBS organized three theoretical training sessions, combined with practical sessions on the agricultural plot  (practice fields), of the participants from the Agro-cooperative Everest U.A. within this project. These sessions provided participants with knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices and the impact of mining on the environment, enabling them to apply more efficient farming techniques.

The year was ceremoniously concluded on December 14, 2024, when participants received agricultural materials to help them further develop their farming activities. This handover marked an important step in their learning process and motivation for the future.

In 2025, the activities will continue with new training sessions and ongoing technical support in production and marketing. The goal is to further improve the living conditions of the communities and create a more sustainable future.

The EMSAGS project is a crucial initiative for promoting existing alternative livelihoods in communities that are heavily dependent on mining. Through training, practical support, and raising awareness of sustainable agricultural practices, the project is working towards a future where both people and the environment can thrive.
