Four-Day Training for Relevant Institutes Involved in the EMSAGS Project
From Tuesday, October 15, to Friday, October 18, employees from various government institutions participated in training sessions focused on the mining sector. These sessions enhanced their understanding in the following areas:
- Business Strategies, Technology, and Environment: Understanding strategic choices related to technology, environmental considerations, and health and safety within artisanal and small-scale gold mining.
- Impacts of Small-Scale Mining: Gaining insight into the effects of mining activities on the environment, as well as the health and safety of workers and local communities, along with strategies to minimize these impacts.
- Safety and Health: Exploring methods to ensure the safety and health of both miners and local communities.
- Best Environmental Practices (BEP): Practical guidelines for implementing BEP in the ASGM sector.
- Environmentally Responsible Mining (ERM): Recommendations for reducing environmental damage in the ASGM sector through responsible mining practices.
- Underground Mining Methods: An overview of the underground mining techniques currently used in Suriname.
During the training, two days were dedicated to field visits focused on the HSE aspects within the ASGM sector. Participants visited two ASGM locations, where they had the opportunity to directly observe the actual work processes. Based on their observations, they were able to identify HSE aspects and formulate mitigation measures.
These trainings have helped to strengthen knowledge and skills, aiming for the sustainable and responsible development of the mining sector in Suriname.
