Improvement of Environmental Conditions in Gold Mining: The EMSAGS Project and the Launch of Educational and Communication Materials

On Saturday, February 22, 2025, the EMSAGS project launched a variety of educational and communication materials. The focus was on youth, communities directly involved in or affected by mining activities in the country, as well as the general public.

The new materials are available in five languages: Dutch, Sranan Tongo, Aucaans, Saramaccaans, and Portuguese. These materials include:

  • An informative booklet about mercury and its harmful effects on humans, animals, and the environment.
  • Posters that visually communicate the message.
  • Radio and video programs aimed at informing a wide audience.
  • Interactive puzzles that actively engage children and youth.
  • A web application for digitally spreading the message.

The launch was well received by a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from the National Environmental Authority (NMA), the Ministry of Natural Resources, and other relevant government agencies. Additionally, there were representatives from the private sector, small-scale gold miners, local communities, and even students from schools like OS Compagniekreek and H.G. Sylvester Secondary school, who actively participated in the launch and related activities.
