Information session for children from the children's homes Gaytrie and Open Poort in Nickerie

On Friday, September 27, and Saturday, September 28, 2024, awareness sessions were held for children from Gaytrie and Open Poort children's homes in the Nickerie district. It is crucial for children to understand the negative effects of mercury use.

During these sessions, organized by the EMSAGS Project in collaboration with the management of the children's homes, the children learned about what mercury is and how it enters our bodies.

The children also learned about the effects of mercury on both human health and the environment, as well as who small-scale gold miners are, where they work, and the methods they use to extract gold. To make the information more engaging and simple, the children watched an animated video about mercury and gold mining.

This interactive approach not only helped the children learn more about this important topic, but also raised awareness about the impact of gold mining and the use of hazardous substances, including mercury. The aim was to encourage them to make sustainable choices and to be responsible stewards of the environment.
