Launch of two films as part of the Small-Scale Mining (SSM) Youth Project: In Collaboration with EMSAGS and Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines
On Saturday, January 18, 2025, two films were launched as part of the youth Small-Scale Mining (SSM) project. This initiative, funded by the EMSAGS project and Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of mercury use in the small-scale gold mining sector, as well as the risks of pit intrusion on concessions held by multinational companies such as Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines.
Awareness and Education
The production of the films is focused on both young people and the broader local community. In particular, the films aim to educate the public about the harmful effects of mercury use in gold extraction and the dangers of pit intrusion in gold concessions. These films serve as educational tools to increase awareness of environmental issues related to the small-scale gold mining sector.
Youth Engagement
Eighteen young people from three communities in the Brokopondo district (Nieuw Koffiekamp, Brownweg, and Compagniekreek) actively participated in the project. They worked alongside professionals to write scripts and transform them into two films. The youth found the experience particularly enriching, not only learning more about the dangers of small-scale gold mining but also acquiring valuable skills in film production.
Future Impact and Distribution
The two films will be utilized during various engagement activities organized by both the EMSAGS project and the community outreach department of Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines. Additionally, the films will be broadcast on several television channels, ensuring that a wide audience can access the message about the dangers of mercury use and pit intrusion.
Collaboration for a More Sustainable Future
The SSM project is a prime example of how local communities and businesses can collaborate to address environmental issues and engage youth in sustainable initiatives. Through education and awareness, the project seeks to reduce the negative impacts of small-scale gold mining and contribute to a more sustainable future for the region.
