Raising Awareness and Promoting Sustainable Environmental Practices at the Water & Fire Festival 2025

The EMSAGS project, along with approximately twenty other companies and organizations, participated in the Water & Fire Festival, organized by WWF-Guianas and De Surinaamsche Bank (DSB) in celebration of Earth Hour. This event, held on March 22, 2025, focused on highlighting the importance of water conservation and environmental protection, with participants contributing their expertise to raise awareness on these critical issues.

At the EMSAGS project booth, visitors were informed about the project's objectives and its collaboration with government institutions, local authorities, and communities to safeguard the environment. Special emphasis was placed on protecting creeks, rivers, and forests, which are vital for the livelihoods of local residents. One of the key topics addressed by the EMSAGS project is the impact of mercury use in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. Mercury poses significant risks to both human health and the environment, particularly through water contamination. EMSAGS is dedicated to promoting eco-friendly mining techniques, ensuring that small-scale miners adopt sustainable practices that minimize pollution and environmental degradation.

In addition to informative sessions, the EMSAGS booth featured engaging activities for both children and adults. Visitors enjoyed hands-on puzzle games and had the opportunity to download the EMSAGS web application. This interactive app includes quizzes, digital puzzles, videos, and photos focused on environmental protection and responsible mining practices.

By participating in the Water & Fire Festival 2025, the EMSAGS project has contributed to increasing awareness about the effects of small-scale gold mining and the need for sustainable, environmentally friendly alternatives.
