Stakeholder Platform meeting strengthens collaboration within the EMSAGS Project

As part of the EMSAGS project, a recent Stakeholder Platform (SP) meeting was held in Paramaribo. This platform serves as a forum for stakeholders in the small-scale gold mining sector to exchange information, foster collaboration, and jointly drive impact.

On June 13, 2025, 41 representatives from various organizations convened — ranging from government agencies to civil society organizations, academic institutions, and platforms representing Indigenous and Tribal Peoples (ITPs). Participants were thoroughly briefed on the project's progress and the concrete initiatives contributing to its objectives.

Key topics discussed included:

  • Establishment of Mining Training and Extension Centres (MTECs) and pilot sites to promote environmentally responsible small-scale gold mining.
  • Institutional capacity building for agencies monitoring the small-scale gold sector.
  • Regional knowledge exchange activities between Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana regarding sustainable gold mining practices.
  • Educational and communication materials developed under the project.
  • Rapid Biodiversity Assessment: Conducted by Anton de Kom University of Suriname in the Compagniekreek area, providing valuable insights into the flora and fauna within the project zone.
  • Sustainable agroforestry as an alternative livelihood: The CELOS Agroforestry Project, funded by EMSAGS, was presented. This initiative, carried out in Compagniekreek and Brownsweg, focuses on sustainable forest-based agriculture in close cooperation with local communities.
  • Focus on gender assessment in Snesi Kondre: The upcoming Gender Assessment in Snesi Kondre and surrounding villages in the Paamaka area was announced. This is vital for integrating gender perspectives into the project.

The SP meetings enhance transparency and strengthen cooperation among all involved parties. Through knowledge sharing and targeted advice, members make a significant contribution to the progress of the EMSAGS project.
