Tropenbos Suriname Trains Farmers in Agroforestry Techniques
On Friday, October 25, 2024, Tropenbos Suriname (TBS) conducted the first training session for farmers from the agro-cooperative Everest U.A. as part of the project “Sustainable Food Security and Awareness on Gold Mining Effects.” This session introduced farmers to agroforestry techniques, highlighting their significance for sustainable agricultural practices. The chosen agroforestry model offers numerous benefits, including improved water management, enhanced biodiversity, and increased resilience to climate change.
During the theoretical part, farmers learned about propagation techniques for ginger and cabbage. This training is designed to equip participants with effective production-enhancing measures. Following the theoretical part, participants engaged in a practical session focused on ginger propagation.
On Saturday, October 26, a second training session was held. Prior to this session, Ms. Carmen Elliott presented the EMSAGS project, outlining its objectives and explaining its connection to TBS's ongoing project. The session concluded with practical training by TBS in sowing cabbage seeds in sowing trays. Twenty-four farmers participated in the training, including 10 men and 14 women.
